Mysterious Ways

With the anniversaries of Mom's and Myrtle's deaths approaching, my thoughts have been even more frequently on them.

I had been thinking a lot lately that about this time last year when Myrtle, who was too sick to go shopping by then but still at home (and not in hospital), wanted to make sure she had little bags of Halloween goodies prepared for the trick-or-treaters. So, I grabbed several assorted large bags of candy at Sam's, found some treat bags at the dollar store and went to pick Chantelle up at the house and head over to Myrtle's and John's house. Chantelle and I and Myrtle (as well as she was able) put together I don't know how many treat bags, but there were a lot. She enjoyed doing that every year and she loved to see the costumed kids come to the door. (One year, I sewed her a large pumpkin costume which she wore to greet the trick-or-treaters.) So, I know how much she loved having us there to help her do that last year. That was October the 11th.

Here's the mysterious part:
Yesterday, I was getting ready to go over to Jon's and Renee's house in order to see the kids before going to work , which I do on the weekends because the house is right down the road from my work. Before going there, I had stopped at Price Chopper because I wanted to pick up some French bread to go with some Spanish chorizo (it has the texture of pepperoni but tastes more like salami, to me) that I was bringing into work to share there. I had collected the bread and the few other items that I needed and headed to the cash register. I was kind of rushing. Well, I picked the shortest line, but it was "liked to be" (a phrase Myrtle used to use quite a bit) the longest, since there was a little old lady (a black woman) unloading the groceries from her cart. I wasn't paying much attention until I put my things on the conveyor belt when she said, in a voice that was feeble and shaky, that she hadn't finished putting her things up. It was then that it struck me how she reminded me of Myrtle, since she had on a wig similar to one that Myrtle wore often and glasses like those Myrtle wore. In fact, her features (slightly) and her mannerisms reminded of Myrtle. I then noticed the cartful of things and immediately apologized for my inattention, collecting my things off of the conveyor belt. At once I saw just how much she was struggling while very shakily putting the things up on the belt, so I asked her if I could help her and she said yes. So I loaded her stuff on the belt for her, put down a plastic order divider, put my things down on the belt and went around the aisle to bag her groceries. She was obviously having a difficult time of it doing these groceries all by herself. So I asked her to wait and I would help her put them in her vehicle since I was going out to the parkiing lot too. She consented. I paid for my groceries after she paid for her order, put my own plastic bag of groceries on my arm and helped her guide her cart through the maze of shoppers out to the parking lot. On the way to her vehicle she told me that usually her husband helps her but that he is a pastor and was in the middle of performing church services at that hour. We found her van (which was in the same aisle as my car) and we put the groceries in the back of it. She thanked me and I wished her a nice day, turning to walk to my car. When I got to my car I realized that I had inadvertently grabbed my own bag of groceries off my arm and had put it in her vehicle. Thankfully she didn't move very quickly. I turned and saw the van still there, so I trotted back and tapped on her window, telling her what I had done. We laughed and she got out to help me look...sweet little thing. I found my groceries and was off again after another laugh with her about it. On the way back to my car, the memory of the day of making treat bags with Myrtle and Chantelle came to mind and I considered that it had been right around this time last year that we had made them. It made me smile all afternoon and I decided to look in my Sam's club statements out of curiousity (I had put the candy on my Sam's credit card last year) to see how close the dates were.

I was overcome with emotion just a short while ago when I dug out the statement and it showed the date of purchase for that candy last year was 10/11/08.

I know that one shouldn't brag about their good deeds and truly the reason for writing this is not to brag. But I had to share with you all the mysterious way in which God touched my life in a unique way yesterday. I have had similar things like this happen before and it always gives me such a shock.

Thank you, Lord. This will be a memory I will keep forever.

Nice story/experience...my guess it was not so much God coming through but Myrtle!

Sorry I've been out of touch...budgets and appraisals keeping me busy.

Hope to see you soon...Dad's.

Love Deb

It's okay. I figured you were busy. Miss your adventure pictures though.

So what will be your status for the upcoming year? Staying where you are, or off on another adventure abroad or stateside?

We can talk about it at Dad's.

Can't wait to see you too. I think Les is coming and maybe Tom with her.

I'll try to post some of my Spain & Belgium pictures...had a good time in both places but really liked Brugge...what I expected to see in an old European City. I hope to get them out there this weekend.

Looking forward to beating you all in Phase 10!!! :)

I can bring the Yahtzee and a deck of cards. They travel pretty easily. Are you bringing the Phase 10. If not, you ought to give Les a heads-up, because we KNOW she has it. That was so much fun with the four of us together when you visited last summer.

Can't wait to see the pics of both places, but I have a keener interest in the ones from Spain. What part of Spain did you visit?

Went to Granada...definitely a different culture...I liked it for the most part. It was very hot! I'll pack the cards...it was fun. Didn't realize Tom might come too. Last I heard is that Steph might join her. Either way, it will be good to see y'all.

I have a friend from Spain who has invited me to visit her there. She actually lives here for the time being, in Troy with her son who attends RPI. She insists I HAVE to visit Spain and stay at her place. There are no definite plans set, but I am grateful for her invitation, which makes the possibilty more feasible.

Granada is jam-packed with history. It was the last key Islamic-held city to fall (in 1492) during the Reconquest of Spain by the Catholic Kings, Isabel and Fernando. Did you visit the Alhambra fortress there?

Rats! It just kills me to know you guys will be enjoying each other's company, laughing it up while playing card/board games at Dad and Inge's and, once again, I won't be there. When are you going?

I know I haven't been in touch a lot lately, but I want you to know that I miss you guys more than I can say. The last year has been something of a challenge with the loss of the job with Brunswick Corp (due to layoffs), starting a new job just a few weeks after that (for which I'm very thankful but grossly overqualified), and spending A LOT of time developing new 3-hour continuing education QuickBooks classes to teach so I can bring in a bit more cash.

Love, Keith

Anyway, hope you guys have fun.

Keith...I'll be there the week of Thanksgiving; will be visiting Kristen the week before in SC. Last year, Les, Karen, Mic and I spent most of our time at Dad's/Inge's at Thanksiving play phase 10...we had a lot of fun, mostly laughing. Kevin joined in the fun a little later in the week. Unfortunately, Karen can't make it this year.

Understand you were in TX and had a chance to visit with Natelle. I know she enjoyed seeing you all. Hope you are all well.

Mic,

I did visit the Alhambra...the evening I first landed and the next day. Very cool both times. I can't imagine living in such a wonderful place. There was one outside staircase, made of stone that had water running down the handrails...intentionally. Water definitely is something cherished in Spain. I tried to upload some of the photos but may have tried too many at once...I'll try again soon. Anyway, I'll bring my laptop and all the photos on a disk so I can show them to you all.

take care!

Oh that is cool. Yeah, except for a some rivers and the (salt water) ocean/sea that surrounds Spain, much of the interior of the country is pretty arid. So I imagine water is (and has always been) revered.

Keith it would be great if you could swing a visit at Thanksgiving too. I will be there from the Monday before until the Monday after.

Hey, Keith, here's an idea. Maybe next year some of us could swing a visit out to your neck of the woods. I still have yet to meet Tracy and your kids and it would be wonderful to see you again. I don't remember the last time we saw each other, do you?

For everyone except Deb and Kevin, that would have been at the get-together in WV for Dad's 85th birthday in July 2005. I had to leave early because the doctor (erroneously) told Tracy that Brendon's arrival was imminent.

Then, the three of us traveled to NC the following July, where we proceeded to put on quite a show for Dad/Inge/Deb/Kevin by a) abruptly leaving Brendon with Debbie to go back to the Greensboro hotel we stayed at to report the "theft" of jewelry that never left our possession, b) having to call 9-1-1 to have Tracy taken to the local hospital for a bad stomach flu and c) promptly getting Dad and Inge to a point where they were violently ill in Lexington at the same time Brendon and I were violently ill in a cheap hotel on the Outer Banks.

If you're lucky, we can probably cook up something like that for you, too.

Michele Maddix said...

I wasn't at the 85th bash because Dad and I were still not communicating then.

But the fun-filled July visit sounds like a blast! I opt for that. LOL

I must say, I vote for neither scenario!!

Glad most everyone is back on track with Dad...life's too short. I would guess none of us are perfect parents!

I would love to visit the Northwest...and eat some crab or salmon! Oh yeah, and see my cute nephews and their parents!

As far as Dad's birthday celebration, the plan is to have it in NC, near where he lives, correct? Don't think he's up for traveling away from home. What plans are in place for it right now...is everyone aware? I know I sent your (Keith's)e-mail to Richard...he seemed interested.

Cheers!

Deb

Except Karen having mentioned to me that the idea for a 90th party was being thrown around, I don't know anything else about it. Do you have more info, Debbie?

Keith, I was just being facetious. Really, Deb's right...neither scenario is best. :)

Hmmm...

Michele,

I could have sworn I included you on the distribution of the emails I sent out on 9/24 and 9/25. In fact, I just checked my outgoing message folder and found that I sent them to mmmaddix@gmail.com. Just let me know if I need to resend to another address.

I didn't know about the location or, for that matter, the approximate dates, but I do know that my preference would be for anytime in the latter 2/3 of June since my work schedule is pretty much set in stone for the first 10 days of every month. Also, it gets very warm and humid there in July and August, so I think late June would be the best option, especially for those of us who deal with K-12 school schedules.

We're considering a baseball theme with "Fowler" jerseys, our numbers (in order of birth) on the front and/or back, and our first names embroidered on the upper back. There are a lot of other good ideas in the emails I sent, so you'll probably want to read them before your visit to Dad's next month as they include a few "research tasks" to be done.

As far as a visit to the Seattle area, you're all welcome here at any time. We have a spare bedroom and, if necessary, can rearrange the boys' sleeping accomodations to create a second spare room. It's a nice big house, with plenty of other "real estate" for putting down sleeping bags, portable beds, and the like.

It rains more often than not between October and May, but the months of June through September tend to run pretty nice. Late July through late August tends to be the hottest.

The best months for shellfish are any months with an "R" in them, but you can get freshly caught Pacific salmon from May through October, I believe. (I know because I caught one on a charter fishing trip this past August...a 29", 12-lb Coho. An incredibly beautiful fish and VERY tasty to boot.)

Anyway, gotta run for now. Will chat later.

Love you guys,

Keith
